צה"ל תקף מוקדם יותר היום (חמישי) מפקד פלוגה מהזרוע הצבאית של חמאס במרחב חאן יונס. המחבל תכנן להוציא לפועל מתווי טרור נגד כוחות צה"ל הפועלים ברצועה, והותקף מהאוויר לצורך הסרת האיום על הכוחות.
